Shekhawati Region
The semidesert Shekhawati region, in the triangular area between Delhi, Jaipur and Bikaner, is famous for its beautifully painted havelis (mansions), which were constructed by the merchants of the region. Most of the buildings date from the 18th century to the early 20th century. The major towns of interest in the region are Fatehpur, Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Ramgarh and Jhunjhunu.








Nawalgarh
The main building in this town was the fort founded in 1737 but today largely disfigured by modern accretions. Havelis of interest include the Aath Havelis, the Hem Raj Kulwal Haveli, the Bhagton-ki-Haveli and Khedwal Bhavan


Bharatpur
Bharatpur is renowned for its World Heritage-listed bird sanctuary, the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. This is one bird sanctuary that even nonornithologists should visit.

The Keoladeo Ghana National Park is 3 Km south of the city centre, and is easily accessed by cycle-rikshaw. The best time to visit the park is from October to late February, when many migratory birds can be seen, including the highly endangered Siberian crane. Only two of these birds have been arriving in the park each October / November. According to recent reports, around 354 species of birds have been identified at the beautiful Keladeo Sanctuary & apart from Siberian cranes, expect to see Saras Cranes, herons, egrets, geese, owls, cormorants, kingfishers and even pythons.

Sariska Tiger Reserve & National Park
Located 107 km from Jaipur and 200 km from Delhi, this sanctuary is in a wooded valley surrounded by barren mountains. It covers 800 sq km and has sambars, spotted deer, wild boars and above all tigers. Project tiger has been in charge of the sanctuary since 1979. The sanctuary can be visited year-round, although during July and August your chance of spotting wildlife is minimal. The best time is between November and June.
